Can I buy a small van for private use?

Can I buy a small van for private use?

I want to buy a small van (e.g. Ford Transit Connect, VW caddy, etc), tax and insure it privately for the purpose of carrying a dog and or bicycles for pleasure use. Can it be done and what pitfalls should I look out for?

Many thanks.

Hi Ron,

You theoretically can, yes. Just remember that you’ll have to tax it as a non-commercial, which means rates worked out according to the engine size. The bigger difficulty could be getting non-commercial insurance. We’d suggest you talk to a broker about this before you buy anything.
