The new Volkswagen Transporter van has officially launched in Ireland, with a starting price of €39,265. The new Transporter comes in both short and long-wheelbase versions, with the choice of two roof heights. As standard, the Transporter is 5,050mm long, which is an increase of 146mm over the old T6.1 Transporter. The wheelbase has also grown to 3,100mm. Long-wheelbase Transporters grow to 5,440mm overall. Stowage volume has increased to 5.8 m3 for the smallest version and 9.0 m3 for the long wheelbase, high-roofed model. The long-wheelbase Transporter can accommodate three Euro pallets, takes a payload of up to 1,330kg (that’s for diesel models only) and has a towing capacity of up to 2,800kg.
Diesel and electric power for the new Transporter
The Transporter arrives in Ireland with a choice of three 2.0-litre TDI diesel engines, with power outputs of 10hp, 150hp, and 170hp. All of these models are front-wheel drive as standard, with an optional automatic gearbox. There is also a PanAmericana model, starting from €42,840, which can be optionally fitted with 4MOTION four-wheel drive.
As well as diesel power, the Transporter now comes with the option of electric power. The new e-Transporter, which has a starting price of €53,695 after grants, is rear-wheel drive, has a 64kWh battery, and the option of three power outputs for its electric motor — 136hp, 218hp, and 286hp. The maximum range on one charge is 331km.
Standard equipment on the Volkswagen Transporter
The new Transporter is well-equipped, with basic Trendline models getting cruise control, keyless start, six-way adjustable driver seat with lumbar support, LED roof lights, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, 12-inch digital cockpit and 13-inch touchscreen with DAB+, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The PanAmericana versions get 19-inch alloys, LED headlights with separate LED daytime running lights, stainless steel scuff plates with illuminated “PanAmericana” lettering, heated seats, Panamericana seat coverings, seven, 15W USB charging ports and a 12v outlet in the dashboard.
There’s also a passenger Caravelle version, available with diesel or electric power, which can seat up to nine passengers. Prices for the Caravelle start from €62,725.
All new Transporter models come with a five-year warranty, five years of roadside assistance and a five-year service plan, all included in the price.
