Renault’s compact van arrives in both diesel and EV forms.

The latest version of the Renault Kangoo has arrived on sale in Ireland, and you’ll be able to buy it in diesel and fully electric forms.

The latest Kangoo can tackle load weights of up to almost 1,000kg and has up to 4.2 cubic metres of load volume, depending on the version. It also comes with 20 new electronic driver assistance systems.

Electric Kangoo gets 300km range with fast-charging

Prices start from €26,495 for the 95hp 1.5 dCi diesel model, which comes with a six-speed manual or seven-speed EDC automatic gearbox. However, much of the spotlight will fall on the new electric version, which has a 45kWh battery and a potential 300km range on one charge. It can be charged up quickly too — at up to 75kW from a rapid DC charger, or, possibly more importantly, at 22kW AC from a kerb-side charger which makes for exceptionally quick top-ups over a lunch break and less queuing for fast chargers.

Prices for the electric Kangoo start from €36,195 (with SEAI grant).

Two lengths available

The Kangoo comes in two overall lengths. There’s an ML19 version with 3.3 cubic metres of load space or an ML21 version with the full 4.2 cubic metres. The maximum payload is 800kg for the diesel ML19 version and 970kg for the diesel ML21.

The electric Kangoo ML19 can handle 600kg, while the ML21 electric can take 760kg.

Standard equipment for basic Start models includes air conditioning and cruise control as standard, as well as auto lights and wipers, and twin sliding doors. Stepping up to Advance spec gets you touchscreen multimedia with smartphone mirroring, parking sensors and a passenger bench seat (also available as an option on Start) which gives a three-seat configuration. Advance models also get rather nice steel wheels which mimic the appearance of an alloy.

Optional safety features

There are also many new electronic safety features, some of which are optional, including autonomous emergency braking, driver fatigue alert, and a number of camera and sensor-based driver aids. Renault says drivers can specify their van with the safety features most suited to their usage. The standard safety kit includes a driver’s airbag, emergency calling, seatbelt reminder, cruise control and speed limiter, and deadlocking for the doors.

In the back, you can spec your Kangoo with handy items such as an internal roof rack which allows long, narrow items such as ladders to be stowed securely, utilising the space above the cabin.

If you use Renault’s ‘Mobilize’ financial service, you can get a new diesel Kangoo on a PCP for €299 per month, with a five-year warranty and five-years of roadside assistance. If you want the electric one, that’s €415 a month.
