Citroën may revive 2CV van with classic looks

Fourgonnette concept is being shown in Paris alongside the new 2CV hatchback concept

Citroen is busy at the Paris motor show this year, showing off a concept version of a retro-styled new-age 2CV hatchback, which will go on sale in 2028 at a potentially very affordable price tag. Alongside that hatchback, Citroen is also showing what might become a new, affordable, but very stylish electric van — the 2CV Fourgounette concept.

Is this going to make it to production?

Quite possibly. Maybe even quite likely. If the 2CV concept hatchback is pretty close to being production-ready (and we think it is), then it would take very little effort to turn it into this practical, useful van version.

What kind of load can the 2CV Fourgounette carry?

We simply don’t know yet, as Citroën has not issued any technical details for what it, after all, is still just a concept car. However, we do know that the passenger car version of the 2CV is supposed to weigh around 1,000kg in production trim, so a payload of around 500kg for this Fourgounette sounds about right. With an electric range in the region of 250 to 300 kilometres, that would make it ideal for city-centre delivery and sales operations.

And as a mobile coffee shop?

Yes, Citroën seems to be anticipating that already, and that’s hardly surprising given how popular a choice it is to convert classic Citroën H vans into mobile coffee docks. The 2CV Fourgonnette concept already has a roll-up shutter at the side of the cargo area, which looks ideal for anyone thinking of selling fresh lattes from their van.

When will we know if it’s happening for real?

Probably quite soon. The passenger version will go on sale in 2028, and will be shown in full production form next year, so we ought to find out then if the van version is viable. Citroën is clearly thinking seriously about it, though, with the company mentioning the “close relationship it has maintained with professionals for more than a century - a commitment deeply rooted in its DNA: supporting those who work, run businesses and travel every day by offering vehicles designed to make their lives easier.”
